George Cheney Blish came west with his father in 1837 and at the age of 15 went to Galena, Illinois, where he became a bookkeeper and later a clerk on a Mississippi steamboat of the Minnesota Packet Company. He became secretary of the company and at the outbreak of the civil war went to St. Paul where his boat was frequently employed in the transportation of troops and supplies down the river. After his marriage he joined L. M. Rumsey & Co. of Chicago a wholesale hardware firm. At the time of his death he was the secretary and treasurer of E. Schneider & Co. |
